I have an employee who is asthmatic, and he's put a back-up inhaler in one of our First-Aid kits here at work, and I'm not comfortable with it since I can't find any regulations in regards to the legalities of it's storage there. It's not narcotic, and the prescription is well labeled for what it is and for who. It'll just be my luck that if there IS a regulation against it, OSHA will show up and find it.
I've looked through the CFR 1910 under everything I can think of, and I can't seem to find any regulations concerning an employee storing his/her own prescription medication in a workplace First-Aid kit.
Anyone got any ideas on where else I might further look for information?
I work in a production facility, and that particular first-aid kit is behind locked doors in our first-aid room. It's only accessible to our "first responders", and no one would have access to it without trained supervision.
Also, it's a "back-up" in case he forgets the one he carries with him all the time.
He's one of our plant employees on the production line and doesn't actually have a space of his own.
If its in the communal kit I would just tell him that for insurance purposes you cannot allow him to place prescription medication of any kind in a public area, nor can you guarantee him that someone else will not use it, infect it with their germs and you cannot even insure that it will be there when he looks for it. Contact your insurance for actual protocol. You may have to store an emergency supply for him somewhere where no one else has access- but for day to day medicines I'm pretty sure they should be kept at his desk or on his person
Does anyone know what goes into a standard, generic, first aid kit? I need to refill the one at work- and they basically picked the wrong man for the job. Ideas?
I gave them the list of stuff you guys mentioned- I work at a hotel and the General Manager almost had a heart attack! Apparently, I was a lot more prepared then they had anticipated. At least of anyone DOES have a heart attack, I'll have enough supplies ready!
Hard to come up with specifics. Where do you work? You can also buy a prefilled kit, but they are expensive and not very practicle. Some companies will sell the kit and train you on how to use the stuff, but then they keep coming back and replacing stuff and fleecing the companies they service. I was approached by a company to work for them and refused to do it. Try to avoid these people.
