I'm building my own first aid kit. I know there are pre-made ones on the market, but I already have a lot of the stuff from an old one that came out of my car. And although I appreciate the thought, I'm not looking for a typed up list from a camping site. I'm looking for items that are the most practical and actually get used. We are fortunate to live in a city with numerous places to camp less than half an hour away. Because of my DH's work we won't be going any further, thus we will always have quick access to medical care.
This is what I already have:
3 dozen bandaids, various shapes and sizes (I can add more if need by, I have a ginormous Costco sized box.)
2 triangle bandages
several rolls of gauze, gauze pads, tape, and scissors
triple antibiotic cream (this is new, just purchased)
2 pairs of gloves (do I need more?)
a hypothermia blanket
I know I need to get some tweezers, benadryl, and tylenol. What else?
TIA!
Also, we have a 4yo, almost 2yo, and a dog if that matters.
Thank you so much momshieb. I knew there were simple items I was forgetting. I do have some alchol pads so I'll throw those in. I'll pick the rest up tomorrow.
Anyone else?
I have been camping with three kids for YEARS (they are now grown, but all had allergies and asthma, so have done the first aide thing)
I would add: cortisone cream for bug bites, some type of antiseptic (like betadyne or hydrogen peroxide), an ace bandage, and two of those ice packs that only get cold when you bang them (ask your pharmacist or a local sports coach). I agree that you need the tweezers, benadryl and tylenol!
This is the First Aid Kit that I use on extended hikes, and long term camping expeditions. It is what I have come to need after a whole year of ...
I going to buy some instant ice packs, burn gel, bandages, neosporin, some alcohol pads. I was wondering what else might need their a group of nine people going three kids 3,8,and 9. I need any ideas possible.
What you have is fine but also include
Pain killers/NSAIDs (ie Advil, Tylenol, etc. something to reduce swelling, fever, and pain)
ACE Bandage...in fact, a couple of these. Sprains are common, these are an easy fix.
If any kids are allergic to stings, they should have an Epi-Pen. Benadryl may be helpful for other allergic reactions (think poison ivy).
Gauze pads or even Maxi pads to stop any bleeding. I don't know how far from help you may be going, but have something to staunch a wound.
To me, bug spray is a first aid preventative measure, so I'll include it on my list even though I'm sure it's packed already.
It was said, but Tweezers. Splinters, stingers, and ticks require tweezers.
If you have room in your pack, include the following optional items:
An ER trauma surgeon
X-Ray machine
An Automatic Defibrillator
Med-Evac helicopter
a copy of Grey's Anatomy (the textbook, not the TV show)
The complete box set of Grey's Anatomy (the TV show, not the text book)
A cooler full of spare human organs (just be sure to hang these from a tree out of the reach of bears)
Otherwise, you should be set. Enjoy the trip.

I am going away and I was wondering if anyone new what I should keep in a first-aid kit.
I am going camping.
Make sure you have one or two of those emergency rescue blankets that look like tinfoil, they keep your body heat in and are packaged into little compact squares... Keep one in the glove box and one in the trunk - keep one INSIDE the car in case you ever get trapped inside you car after an accident in a ditch or ravine or something. You should also keep a flashlight, extra batteries, an emergency auto glass window breaking tool with seat-belt cutter if you ever end up in the water in your car ( flash flood - or drive into a lake or river ) you will not be able to open your car door until the car is completely submerged and the pressure equals out and electric roll down windows won't work and it is hard as hell to break window glass without one of these tools. Also pack a few protein bars and a jug of distilled water. Flares, a whistle, be sure and bring along extra meds if you are on any... and like the woman above me posted just a regular first aid kit... Be sure it has some Neosporin in it and rubbing alcohol, and be sure and bring some benadryl pills in case you have an unexpected allergic reaction. Cell phone and charger and/or spare batteries and waterproof matches and a lighter. It's also a good idea to keep a simple cheap wool skull cap or ski mask and extra wool socks and gloves in the car ( you lose most of your body heat from the top of your head ) And Nose Toes and Fingers are the first things to go with frostbite Best of luck
I'm going away for 2 days walking and one night camping with a group and I'm in charge of taking the first aid kit. I've never done it before but I have a ruff idea of what to put in but can anyone tell me the basics and maybe a few extras?
First aid kit Checklist - This would be a basic list of items needed.
*Antiseptic wipes or lotions, for cleaning cuts and grazes.
* Cotton wool or cotton balls
* Adhesive dressings or plasters, for small cuts and blisters.
* Assorted sterile dressings for covering large wounds.
* Sterile eye dressing.
* Triangular bandages for slings or bandaging.
* A roll plaster or micropore tape.
* bandages for sprains.
* Safety pins, tweezers and blunt-ended scissors.
* Painkillers e.g.: paracetamol.
* Antihistamine cream for insect bites and stings
* Mobile phone
* List of people previous medical history and medications eg. asthma pumps, insulin, epipens etc.
Also a pen a pad are useful in case you need to write medical information down to pass onto medics eg. time of accident, heart rate etc.
Hope that helps. Have fun x
