What do you think of the handbook Saint-Frances Guide to Pediatrics? Why is it out of print?

First Aid for the Wards give high rating for Saint-Frances Pediatrics but apparently LWW is no longer selling it on it's website. I don't understand. Anyone using Saint-Frances Pediatrics, what do you think of it, is it overrated or not as good as what people thought?

I've no idea what this book is all about, but in med school we all used Harriet Lane from Hopkins for our peds rotation.

Should I take legal recourse for a dog bite in IL ?

Yesterday, my wife and I went out for our Sunday morning walk. From a distance, we saw a lady coming towards us with her big German Shepherd. I had a uneasy feeling about it and as they neared us, we stood some distance aside waiting for them to pass us. Then, suddenly unprovoked, dog rushed towards us and bit my wife. I immediately took her to emergency ward - where the doctor treated her with first aid/ Tetanus shots. We called up the police and they sent the Animal control team to interview the dog owner. The owner DENIED that my wife was bitten and said that their dog was being friendly!!

This has thoroughly incensed me and my wife. My wife is still traumatised over the incident and she's expecting me to do something about it. What should be my next step be? Should I seek legal help? I don't want to pay any more money than what I am already paying towards the medical expenses.
Responding to Faith's questions

- When the dog owner asked us "Is she Okay"? I said she's not. But told her to leave right away with the dog as we didn't want to risk a 2nd attack.

- What I want? I wanted an apology. And that they would offer to make good on the medical bills. We have insurance. So, our out of pocket expenses won't be much. But they chose to deny it.

But an apology at this stage (48 hrs have passed) is meaningless.

If the lady was a good person she would have offered to pay the hospital bill. Instead she denied the incident. I would definitely take legal action. You can have a free consultation with a lawyer ask them about the overall outcome of the finances you've put out.

I had skiing accident couple of days back and my knee hurts now?

I recently went for skiing, had an accident on the slope, ski patrols took me to the first aid room, and then I went to emergency ward, they took x-ray, fortunately there is no bone fracture and the doc said X-ray will not show ligament tear and they asked to take rest for two days, and then go for MRI scan. Now my condition after 2 days is, still the knee is swollen and i m not able to bend my knee, any help ?

Sounds like you probably tore a ligament. Question. Does your knee feel "funny" as if it can't hold your weight and might give out on you as you walk? If this is the case, and if it does actually give out this is something you MUST tell your doctor because that would save you a lot of time in money (at least in the begining) because there are tests your doctor can physically do right there in the office to diagnos this so you won't have to have an MRI

But then. Depending on how bad the tare surgery will probably be nessisary. Go to the site listed in sources and they will be able to tell you more about it.
Hope this helps : )
Hope you get better soon!

Fixing to start hiking with my dog?

Okay i know i need to bring water, food, and first aid kit. What should i bring in the first aid kit? How much water for a 60 pound Australian Cattle Dog/Lab mix for an 1 to 2 hour hike and maybe a 30-40 minute picnic after wards? How much food should i bring the equivalent for 1 meal or what? is their anything else? advice please
My dog is also healthy and pretty active.
I live in Florida and it has been ranging from the 80's to the 90's where i will be taken him hiking

Just to clear this up food is not for while we are exercising but just in case we get lost. just so you all understand i am not an incompetent owner

Good answers...let me add you should really carry a blanket in your first aid kit...in case your dog gets hurt and you need to carry him..a litter type carry is the safest way to do it so he won't further re injure whatever is injured. Also, some dogs FREAK when hurt, and if you put a blanket over their head and cover their eyes it helps to calm them down.
Very little/no food tto eat (yeah, unless you get lost). I would recommend hiking in the early, early morning before the heat really kicks in. My boy hates the heat and in summer he gets exercised from 6 30 to 8 am ...or any portion of that that works for him.
One gallon water, 2 meals should do it.
Have fun!!

Treatment Of Severe Burn Injuries
Almost three quarters of patients with extensive burns die of the consequences of a severe infection. In the current edition of Deutsches Arzteblatt International, Timo A. Spanholtz of the Cologne-Merheim Burn Center and his coauthors discuss the acute therapy and follow-up care of burn disease.

Optimal treatment of severely burned patients necessitates collaboration between primary care physicians, emergency physicians and specialist departments for plastic surgery. During first aid from the emergency physician, the patient is removed from the danger zone and is administered adequate fluid, and drugs, over several intravenous accesses. Additional first aid measures include cooling and sterile covering of the burned skin.

The Central Office for Burn Injuries in Hamburg then organizes the necessary transfer to a specialist department. There are about 100 beds in Germany for severely burned patients, including 10 in the Cologne-Merheim Burn Center of Witten/Herdecke University. The lives of these patients are at risk from pneumonia, pulmonary failure, sepsis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Bacterial infection of the wound is a frequent complication.

After intensive medical treatment, the patient may be given further wound care, physiotherapy, ergotherapy, and the necessary psychiatric treatment in a special follow-up ward. The primary care physician providing follow-up care must be able to recognize scar contractures leading to functional restriction and may refer the patient to the Burn Center once again for a new operation.
thank you!!!!

Severely burned patients are treated and followed up by specialists in Cologne. The patient is first removed from the danger area and administered drugs, as well as cooling the burning area. The physician will find how the burn scar will restrict the patient, and may refer the patient for an operation.

Typically, burn victims risk pneumonia, bacterial infection, pulmonary failure, sepsis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The patient may also be given psychiatric treatments as follow up.
