Hi,
Im doing an assignment on Cabin Crew First Aid on board an aircraft and i have to answer the following question:
Explain the basic principles of First Aid that could be used as a checklist for any situation involving First Aid?
I know its about the ABC as this can be used for any situation but how could I relate this to being on an aircraft?
Thanks in advance,
Sarah :)
ABCDE are the essentials and basic principals in first aid. D stands for Disability (or level of consciousness). E stands for expose (check the patient for injuries) and environment (taking the environment into consideration.) I assume you've already been shown how to check ABC? ABC obviously come first though before D and E, as there is no point checking for injuries etc. if the person needs CPR because they aren't breathing.
Environment would be a good thing to talk about though as obviously the altitude and change in pressure may effect the patient's circulation, heart rate and will increase the chances of hypoxia (decreased oxygen levels in the patient) and DVT. Hypoxia is often noted by Cyanosis (blue tinge to lips and nailbeds). In this case, Oxygen therapy is essential. Ensuring the patient is sitting upright will also help increase oxygen levels and heart rate if the patient's original complaint was of breathlessness or chest pain.
If ABC are ok and the patient is NOT hypoxic, insist on the use of the recovery position to ensure patient safety.
You might want to mention patient dignity also, as aircrafts are a difficult environment to maintain this in, is it more essential because everyone is so close together. The last thing the patient wants is to wake up to find everyone looking at them.
The main thing to remember though is that ABCDE are the basic prinicipals for ALL first aid situations.
Good luck :)

I'm a graduate of medicine but have not yet taken the board exam, i just needed the extra money. The employer has no problem hiring me, but students may expect an M.D. This is just a part time job.
Do you have your certification yet? If you do, then I don't see anything wrong with doing it. Talk to your local hospital or CPR training centre to see if you can. The only problem may be is that if you are licensed to do so, it could create a lot of problems. Also, talk to your professors or another member of your medical school.
It may be better to have a professional who gives CPR certification courses to do it.

You do not need an M.D. to teach First AID and CPR, you do need certification and a bachelor's degree though. Check your state's requirements at your local Red Cross chapter.
Is a lifeguard negligent if he does no offer first-aid to a victim who hurt himself trespassing (vaulting a high fence and slipping on a nearby flutter board) and did not request it to be given (he didn't deny it, just didn't request)? The victim is escorted off the premises and ends up in a coma. Does the fact that he was trespassing constitute as a danger to other patrons? What are you legally obligated to do for a victim who hurts himself trespassing on your premises?
What if the victim is trespassing and immobilized (unconsious or broken spine) on your premises? What then?
The vitim in my story was still consious and responsive when he left the pool, just severely intoxicated.
You guys aren't understanding me. This is a hypothtical on an exam and I have to decide whether or not the guards are being negligent.
I probably should have added this. The victim had very minor head trauma and was able to walk several miles (w/o making any attempts for help) before he lapsed into a coma. The other tricky part of the question is that retaining a fully mobile trespasser (like I said the injury was minor at first) constitutes as a hazard towards the patrons.
in your hypothetical, if they are lifeguards, they must perform first aid even on people who tresspass. if you are in a job where providing first aid is part of the job, not doing so is negligence period.
no i am not a life guard nor have i ever been. but i have had jobs where giving first aid is part of the job. in one of my jobs, (as a prison guard) if one inmate went into an area where he was not authorized to be then got hurt, i would have had to provide first aid, even though the inmate was in the wrong and essentially tresspassing by his unauthorized access.
