what kind of first aid do teachers have to be taught. Is it different for different types of teachers. e.g. gym teachers?
do you have any stories of a teacher having to use first aid on a hurt or sick student.
please answer and let me know your stories...thanks!!
In order to be certified in Washington State, I had to complete recognized (in my case, Red Cross) CPR (Adult only), First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens courses. All students in the Education program with me attended the same classes, regardless of what subject they taught.
The First Aid portion of the class taught us how to respond to first aid emergencies until medical help could be reached: how to bandage open wounds, how to bandage a wound with impalement, how to splint a broken bone, how to respond to head injury, how not to move a kid who just fell from the top of the monkey bars, etc.

Regular teachers are taught no first aid. We're given gloves and told how to dispose of body fluids.
Coaches, etc. have CPR training and first aid training.
Yes! Some wonderful schools provide them to their teachers free of charge and teachers can earn continuing education units toward their teaching relicensure. I think this practice is becoming more and more commonplace and it is a wonderful movement in education.
why is it important for teachers to be current with first aid training?
That's an odd question to me because we're taught to never touch them and to call for the nurse in a medical emergency.
I don't know which classes to take. I'm getting confused by all these titles AED, Family and Friends, etc etc.
I just need something very basic since I will be working with most children and other certified adults.
I supposed I should sign up for the HeartSaver CPR and First Aid courses, correct?
Heartsaver CPR and First Aid will be sufficient. AED is a defibrillator (it is a good idea to learn how to work an AED if the school you work in has one- if not, there really isnt a point.) Most CPR classes will bring out a defibrillator and briefly show you how to work it but you will not really learn how to use it unless you take a special course. Each course is between 2-4 hours.
