What are all the first aid items needed for strains and sprains?

Materials from a typical first aid kit would be quite helpful...

1 A splint from a drug store, but you can use anything rigid, even a thick magazine.
2 Ace (compression) wraps, 3" and 4" ones are best
3 Ice packs
4 tape (athletic, surgical, stretch)

Describe the symptoms and first aid procedures for a.) Fractures, b.) Strains and sprains?

The signs and symptoms for a fracture can be remembered using the acronym PLUSDICT:

Pain
Loss of Power and/or Movement
Unnatural Movement
Swelling and Brusing
Deformity
Irregularity
Crepitus (CRUNCHING!)
Tenderness

To treat a fracture, the area surrounding the fracture should be stablised using rolled-up clothing or anything which will protect it from movement; and you should treat for shock by raising the legs.

A strain or sprain can usually be detected by using the patients history; what happened before the injury occured. There is usually pain; swelling and poor movement in the direction of the foot. RICE is used to help remember the treatment:

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

hey, I'd help but it is a lot of info. besides you need to learn it for yourself. after all this is first-aid. that means that you are expected to take someones life into your hands and keep him alive/treat him until help arrives. if you can't do that because you earned the badge but never learned how to do it then you are endangering someone else. trust me i know. not just preaching. I'm a combat medic and I'm expected to do just that. help someone until i can get him to a medical doctor that can provide definitive care. i also teach Combat Life Saver courses to army personnel. they do everything that you just asked, and will probably be tested harder than you will. I'll let you know that if i ever find one of my student's studying in this way i will bring the hammer of god down on their head so fast that they won't know what hit them.
