what is a dangerously low heart rate? why not everyone take Atenolol like a vitamin?

Can a heart withstand 234 beats per minute? Mine did in 1986 after an electrical shock and my heart rate was recorded once I got to the first aid office. I've got documents to verify. Any way, on the slow end, I had a friend who was 87 and he needed a pacemaker, his BPM were around 38-40. He died at age 88, refused to see doctors for any reason. My father had a pacemaker and died of a heart attatck and complications at age 88. I'm on blood pressure medicine and today my heart rate seemed low. It was in the high 50's.
I remember back in 2001 I lost 15% body weight (23 pounds) in 3 weeks without dieting. I was taken off a heart medication because my heat rate was too low due to the weight loss and medication. I think my heart rate was noted in the 40's during that episode.
So, what is a dangerously low heart rate? In the 30's I can see that, but they say 60-100 is normal. The doctor who gave me atenolol said "you'll live longer" if you take this, implying 60 beats was better than 100 per minute. If that is true why not give everybody Atenolol like a vitamin?

The danger of a low heart rate has to do with your cardiac output. There are several factors in this, only one of which is your actual heart rate. Things like...

Bloodpressure
Peripheral vascular resistance
Cardiac contractility
Left ventricular function
Ejection Fraction
Lung Function
Et al....

Its like the motor in your car. There are many things which interact with each other to produce the end result - your car moving forward. Air intake, fuel injection, proper combustion, bearings, seals, oil pressure, radiator function. Each or all of these things can contribute to how well your car functions.

In the body, a low heart rate is only good if everything else is functioning well, like with an athlete. A 20y/o swimmer might have a very healthy heart rate at 50, due to the great condition is cardio-vascular system is in.

Atenolol for this 20yo athlete would be very, very bad. Atenolol is a beta-blocker. This would drop his heartrate, drop his bloodpressure, possibly making him prone to lose consciousness and collapse. It would also inhibit the body's ability to increase heart rate based on oxygen demand.

Anyway... long story short... atenolol is good. But only if you NEED it. Lower heart rates aren't always better, just in some patients. Everyone is different, and has different needs.

i need legal advice regarding workman's comp?

I work for a resort in Michigan. I've recently hurt my wrist badly at work. I think it might be a result from an electric shock I received at work a few weeks ago, but I'm not sure. But anyway, the pain I have in my wrist could be carpal tunnel. I have an appointment to see my works doctor tomorrow to find out. My main question is about workman's comp. Today when I informed my supervisor about my pain she tried everything she could to tell me it was my fault and that it wasn't hurt at work. Then when I asked to see a doctor (and they would pay for it) she sent for a first-aid trained girl to tell me to take Ibuprofen. Then my supervisor and human resources proceeded to intimidate me in a vacant room I was cleaning. They told me that an electrical shock didn't do this, and that I have had other incidents and am "accident prone" and that they dont know if they want to keep me around if I cant follow safety procedures. They also told me that I can no longer perform the basic functions of the job and that if I cant do that they they dont need me. I didnt get fired, but I am certain I am headed down that road. I just dont know what to do at this point. I have a date with their doctor tomorrow, but I am pretty sure considering its their doctor, that its not going to go well for me tomorrow. Please help!!

Suggestions:

1) Go to your local Public Library - ask the Reference Librarian to help you find books about handling Workman's Comp claims. One book that I found helpful was "Win Your Unemployment Compensation Claim" by Attorney Lawrence Edelsein (ISBN 1-57248-225-7).

2) Document EVERYTHING! In a diary/journal, write everything down starting with your date of injury. Keep this factual, in case it needs to be used as evidence later. (Don't say things like: "That SOB*** told me ****.") DON'T give this to your employer - keep it at home. Write in it every day regarding your injury.

3) Contact your state's Bureau of Workers' Compensation ASAP!! Your local hospital's emergency room might be able to give you the contact information.

4) As a last resort, you may need to contact an attorney that handles Workers' Comp claims. Call your local (usually county) bar association, ask them for names of lawyers that handle Workers' Comp claims for the employEE.

When you call the law office(s), insist on speaking with the Attorney. Do not tell all the little details of your matter to the Secretary - save the details for the Lawyer. When you finally get the Attorney on the phoneline, ask him/her:
-Do they give FREE, initial consultations?
-How much do they charge?
-Do they accept payments on their accounts?
-Can they help you? OR Refer you to someone who can help you?

Good luck to you.
