Why do people always have to suffer from other people’s mistakes?
Hallie never had an easy life. Her father left her mother when she was 5 years old, which drove her mom to start using drugs. When she turned 6 her mom died of a drug overdose. So it was just her and her sister against the world. They were both adopted to the same family, only problem was, their new parents were both loved to use drugs and drink even more than their mom did. And then, her sister died, at the age of 14, leaving young, 10 year old Hallie with that awful family all on her own. Her parents abused her, and told lies to the police that she fell down the stairs, or burnt herself on her curling iron, or she slipped on ice outside. She planned to get as far from them as possible when she graduated high school, but of course, life always has other plans.
“I need you to take care of your father today, he’s sick again.” Teresa, her mother yelled from upstairs as Hallie prepared to go to school.
“But I have to go to school…” Hallie began.
Teresa came running down the stairs, a scowl painted on her face. “Says who? That’s right, not me. And you have to listen to me. You’re staying here. I don’t care about your grades, and neither should you. Both your father and I dropped out junior year, and look where we are.” She smiled as she motioned around her.
Teresa was a very plump woman, with a puffy, purplish face, and dyed grey hair. At the moment she had a long, flowery night gown on, with multiple over sized curlers wrapped around her scrappy, long, grey hair.
“Right, well as much as I’d love to turn out like you…” Hallie shivered at the thought, “I do care about my grades, and we’ve got finals today.” She shrugged.
“And?” Teresa demanded, her purple face slowly turning red.
“And, well I’m a freshman and I want to do well on my tests, I want to make a good impression at the school and with the teachers, and I want a high school diploma, not to mention a college degree…”Hallie began.
“Hold on there! And what makes you think you’re smart enough to even make it into college?” Teresa yelled. “I mean look at your mother, got herself killed! And your father, well, no one’s seen him in years. Might as well have dropped off the face of the earth! You’ll stay here and care for your father.” She snapped.
“I’m very smart.” Hallie squeaked. “And I need to go to school today. I’ve stayed home so much to take care of Fredrick that I might even have to go to summer school! I really can’t miss anymore.” Hallie explained.
“You may not call your father Fredrick, it is disrespectful.” Teresa snapped.
“He’s not my dad, and I’m not calling him that.” Hallie argued.
“Excuse me? You will do as I say without talking back. I’m tired of this attitude. Hand over your phone, you’ve lost communication privileges, and you’ve lost homework privileges, and one more thing.” Teresa walked down the steps, so she was just in front of Hallie. She slapped her across the face, leaving a large red mark. “You do as I say.”
Hallie wiped the tear off her cheek, set her backpack back onto the floor and walked up the stairs to Fredrick’s room.
“Can I get you anything sir?” Hallie mumbled.
“What?” He shouted. He reached over to the bedside table and stuck his hearing aid in his ear. “What?” He yelled again.
“Can I get you anything?” Hallie yelled.
“Well no need to yell, but yes, hand me that TV remote, go fetch me some new magazines that I haven’t read yet, bring me up some soup, crackers, water, coffee, and fluff my pillow.” He smacked his saliva covered lips together and squinted his wrinkly eyes to see if Hallie had moved. “Go on.”
Another down side to Halle’s parents, they looked more like grandparents. At 14 Hallie had parents that were about to reach 70, lovely.
“Yes sir.” Hallie mumbled. She rushed over beside him to fluff his pillow. “Lean forward.”
“What?” He yelled.
“Lean forward!” Hallie yelled back.
“How dare you tell your father what to do!” Fredrick yelled as he smacked her across the face.
“So I can fluff your pillow!” Hallie said through her teeth, the red spot on her cheek getting darker.
“Never mind that, go fetch me my reading and food. Go on, I won’t live forever.” Fredrick ordered.
“And thank god for that.” Hallie mumbled as she tossed the remote on the bed and walked down the stairs.
“Now you take good care of him today.” Teresa ordered.
“What’s even wrong with him this time? He seems fine.” Hallie said.
“How dare you accuse your own father of faking an illness!” She said as she hit Hallie on the arm. “And maybe he needed a day off. None of your business, don’t you have work to do?” Teresa pointed towards the kitchen.
“Why do I have to be here if he’s just taking a day of then?” Hallie asked.
“Just do it!” Teresa yelled as she grabbed her o
