I woke up with a paper thin cut under my eye, just below the lid. I've washed it out with a warm rag and put a small dab of neosporin on it, but it is still irritated and swollen. What else should I be doing?
You did the right thing. Keep it clean and use the neosporin - these things take time.

A few days ago we moved into a new apartment, and I have this set of six plain-edged mirrors I had to buy for a college project once. I've kept them around because I thought I could use them for decoration and just never got to hanging them, and usually I keep them high/put away, but because we just moved I had them in a corner. We then put our laundry bin in front of it and I forgot abou them.
So I was letting my rats free-range in my bedroom, and I knew they were playing in the blanket in that corner but I completely forgot about the mirrors. A few minutes later I picked up one of my boys and realized he had this GIANT gash on him. At first we thought it was an abscess, and when we realized it was fresh thought he had fought with the other boys (although we hadn't seen it and had been in the room the whole time). Then we realized...the mirrors. And the cut is very clean, so it can't have been claws.
However, he seems COMPLETELY unfazed by this. He let me get right in the cut to clean it out with some warm, salty water, and then licked it a bit himself but has otherwise been ignoring it. It didn't really bleed except it oozed blood a bit when I rinsed it. He is showing zero signs of pain, he's being a complete spaz and running everywhere. We set him up in a separate cage so that he would hopefully calm down and stop stressing the wound and 20 minutes later he's still monkeying around at the top of the cage and launching himself into the hammock to swing and stuff.
The wound is scary looking but I don't think it's too deep (not sure how I'd tell the difference between muscle and regular tissue though) and it's probably just less than an inch long, what worries me is that it's near his back thigh so it keeps opening up when he monkeys around.
Aside from taking him to the vet (which... I can't do... I have fallen on hard times and am looking for a 2nd job, but at the moment can't even feed myself. The boys are set, they have a years' supply of lab blocks, but a vet trip is out of the question)... what else can I do? Is the saltwater okay? We don't have neosporin because my boyfriend is allergic, which is why I was using sea salt water. Was separating him the right thing to do? What else can I do to help him? :/
I'm going to be monitoring him really closely for changes in behavior/in the wound but in the meantime, for tonight and tomorrow, I just need some short-term solutions.
And also just to clarify I'm 100% horrified with myself for not realizing that some freaky ass mirrors were just waiting to cut somebody in my room, I can't believe I left them out and I hate myself for overlooking something so dangerous. WHILE I was watching them play. I say this because PLEASE don't criticize me right now, that's why I came here and not goosemoose.
Never ever ever ever again.
why would u have a rat? and dont worry u can get a new one
My two dogs were wrestling in the living room, and one ended up cutting his neck on a broken plastic bin. Now, if this same cut had been on me, it's the kind of thing I would put a band-aid on. Not serious with a little bit of blood.
I cleaned up my dog with some warm water, and he doesn't seem to be in any pain - maybe a bit of discomfort but nothing more.
Is this best left just to heal and scab up by itself, or is it better to treat it? If so, how and with what products?
Thank you!
clean it with some antibacterial soap and neosporin. just like you would do for yourself. monitor for signs of infection.
