First aid for cold water drowning victims?

I have read about a treatment for cold water drowning victims:
"If available, place the person in a bath of hot water at a temperature of 105 to 110 degrees. It is important that the victim's arms and legs be kept out of the water to prevent "after-drop". After-drop occurs when the cold blood from the limbs is forced back into the body resulting in further lowering of the core temperature. After-drop can be fatal."
May someone explain the process? If the core is sufficiently warm enough, shouldn't the blood entering be warmed before it hits the heart? It does pass through several blood vessels first, and the temperature of the water remains constant, and can be raised.
In fiction, I have read of other ways.
In Neil Gaiman's American Gods, Hinzelmann saves Shadow from cold water drowning and warms him up by placing him in a hot water bath, but with the limbs included. Shadow is in hot water to the neck.
In Dan Brown's Deception Point, Rachel Sexton and her friends are saved from cold water drowning in the arctic circle by the crew members of the USS Charlotte, who give them a hot water shower, but described by the crew as lukewarm, epinephrine injections, and a vigorous massage.
What is your comment on those procedures?
I mean after they are resuscitated, after CPR is done on them, they are breathing but shivering cold, what is the best way to warm them up.

ok, i am going to answer 2 questions as it's confusing the way you asked the question.

1. Hypothermia, from being in cold water.

It is NOT advised to put someone with hypothermia into a bath, this could send cold blood from the body's surface to the heart too quickly and could cause complications.
This is the current treatment for hypothermia

1. Move the patient indoors or somewhere warm as soon as possible
2. Once they are sheltered remove all wet clothing and dry the person
3. Wrap them in dry blankets, towels, clothes or coats, basically anything you have but give the head and torso priority.
4.Use your own body heat, hug them gently
5. Give the person warm drinks such as tea, but not alcohol. Also try and give them some high energy foods like chocolate

hypothermia can be a life threatening condition, and it is important for anyone suffering from it to receive advanced care asap.

2. Drowning.
(these are the latest UK guidelines)

lay the person flat on the ground
extend the head to open the airway
give 5 initial rescue breaths
then start CPR at a rate off 30 breaths too 2 rescue breaths.
This should be done for 1 minute before going for help if you are alone

How much Ammonium Nitrate is in the Large Life line first aid disposable cold pack?

I'm doing an experiment for summer school to answer the questions i have about ice packs like:
- Does the quantity of ammonium nitrate in the same amount of water change how cold it gets
- How does the coldness for my cold packs compare with commercial cold packs
- Does the particle size of ammonium nitrate affect the coldness of the cold packs

I found a good deal on a bunch of life line ice packs but it costs a lot of money for them. I don't know if it will be cheaper to buy lab grade from a chemical store or buy the cold packs i found online and cut them open. So I need to know how much ammonium nitrate in grams is in the large Life Line disposable cold pack.

thanks

there is always an excess of ammonium nitrate in the cold pack so that the pack gets as cold as possible. water is the limiting reactant. if there were less ammonium nitrate and it was the limiting reactant, it would alter the temperature that the pack would reach. the change in temperature is equal to molality x freezing point constant for the solvent.
altering the molality of the solution will alter the change in freezing point depression as long as the salt is not at or above it's maximum solubility.

what should be the first aid.
what is his problem?

doctor asks him to take pills and says its nothing.
but to him in such a state almost every alternate day or 3 days in a week is pathetic. it's tough to see a loving dad in such a state. please help.
he doesnt take drugs like heroin...
he doesnt take drugs like heroin...

dad needs better glucose control. he needs to check his blood sugar, pre-meals, and pre-bedtime. he needs to take his meds as prescibed. he needs 1800 - 2200 calorie diet daily. he also needs to reduce the sodium in his diet to control his high blood pressure. dad needs a bedtime snack to ensure blood sugar does not go too low during sleep. he needs light exercise daily and continue to keep regular scheduled appointments with his doctor. keeping daily logs of blood sugars will be helpful for your dad to watch the trend of his blood glucose. last recommendation is to have your dad google diabetic nutrition/ diets to get better understanding of foods better suited for him.

What is the first aid for heat and cold wave?

For heat stroke, remove from source of direct heat, rest the patient, loosen clothing, cool down with water poured on head (severe heat stroke can cause brain damage) and body or with wet cloths, raise fluid intake (water and sugars is good, but not too much sugars - no more than 10%. Water with sugars is absorbed into the body 26 times faster than plain water).

For cold, move to warm area, if possible, cover with blankets etc, rub extremities such as feet, give warm drinks, keep warm and dry. In emergency, share body heat (the Nazis proved that body heat was the best way to warm up frozen fliers). If caught in snowstorm, get out of wind (wind chill factor is enormous), dig a snow hole and get inside - this warms up pretty well, like an igloo.

First aid kit for the common cold?

My bf is away at college right now...he normally gets a couple of colds a year and currently has one now. Since I can't be there with him, I wanted to send him something like a first aid kit but for the cold. He always sends me things when I'm down, so I wanted to do something nice for him. Now I know over the counter cold remedies don't really work but I'm hoping the thought will help. Here are some items I have so far:

Chicken noodle soup
Get well card
Throat Lozenges
Mug
Hot Chocolate packets

If you were sick and someone was sending you a first aid kit for your cold, what would you want in it?

Aww. That's so sweet and thoughtful. :) I would love all of that stuff. It would also be nice to send him some soft fruits like apples and bananas, and also probably some vitamins. That stuff helps to fight the cold too. I would probably give him an ice pack that he can fill up with ice to put on his head. Perhaps a thermometer too.
