What do I need in my baby first aid kit?

What should I have on hand for baby first aid? So far all I have is baby thermometers (a pacifier one and a normal one which came in a set by AVENT).

Also, can you recommend a baby first aid book?

I would suggest learning how to take care of a baby that is choking. my baby did at 5 weeks. its scary.
Learn baby CPR.
buy the large kit with everything in it from babies r us because YOU DO NOT KNOW WHEN YOUR BABY IS GOING TO BE SICK. keep these items stocked and on hand at all times.
be sure to have gas drops, baby tylenol (and know what you are doing... you can OD your baby on tylenol) nipple cream.
if you are breastfeeding i stop ppl in babies r us and tell them to buy a medela nipple shield. i never dealt with cracked bleeding nipples, also i had latching problems in the beginning and it saved me.
P.S. we ordered dvds from ebay for infant cpr/ choking techniques... im more of a visual learner even though i think i read every book i knew of.

Experienced Moms: what items do i need for baby first aid?

The kits seem to lack... What items/ medicines do you keep on hand?

-Infant Tylenol and Motrin: tylenol is for low fevers, motrin is for higher ones. You don't want to have to run out and get these when your child is ill.
-Mylicon gas drops
-Good quality thermometer (and Vaseline if it is a rectal thermometer)
-Baby nail clippers
-Saline nose drops
-Nasal aspirator (the one the hospital sends home is best)

Other items like band-aids, gauze pads, diaper rash cream and antibacterial lotion are good to have on hand but are probably already in your normal medicine cabinet. The above items are the ones I used most often. Pharmacies will give you medicine droppers with any prescription so don't bother buying one of those.

Baby first aid help and present ideas?

My sister is eight weeks pregnant and im really exited but she says if i want to babysit i have to learn baby first aid what do you have to know? also i want to get her a present for it but dont know the gender any ideas?

St Johns Ambulance holds regular first aid classes. Or phone your nearest ambulance, police or fire station (not their emergency 911/000 number though lol) and ask about first aid classes

As for presents, I would wait until she has her baby shower and has thought about what theme she might like for the nursery and if she has found out the sex of the baby. She might get given some hand me downs from friends and family so it might be a case of waiting to see what other people give her so that you can get something she really wants or needs. Also some people are a little wary of receiving gifts before the magic 3 month mark has passed and the risks of miscarriage have gone down.
