What type of first aid kit would you recommend for a college student?

I'm going to be heading off to college in the fall and I want to buy a first-aid kit. Where would be the best place to buy one, and what should it have in it? Thanks guys! : )

Really all that you need are band-aids, aspirin, some gauze and something to clean cuts. An ice pack might not hurt either. Unless you are going to nursing school, you will hardly ever need anything more extensive.

You can pick up one at walgreens or any similar drug store.

What are the basic materials needed for first-aid when someone gets a wound? ?

Suppose, someone falls down and has a gash with some bleeding, how would you go about treating it?

What material comes after what when taking care of the wound? What is the process like starting with the first step?

Thank you guys.

plenty of gauze
medical tape
antibiotics
a variety of bandaids
gloves (for the caregiver)

For the gash scenario:
First thing to consider is how far/hard did they fall? Enough to have some head or spinal trauma? The first thing EMT/paramedics look for is Airway, Breathing, and Circulation (the ABCs), and potential head or spinal trauma. If there is suspected spine injury, then one person will hold the head at all times and keep it from moving. Then a c-collar will be put on (and further immobilization if its necessary).

Anyway, so if the person's breathing fine and has good circulation and has spinal precautions if needed, then you treat the bleed. Apply direct pressure with a sterile gauze pad and elevate if the wound is in an extremity. If the dressing gets soaked through with blood, apply another dressing on top if it (don't take the previous one off because the top layer of clotted blood will stick to it and open the wound up more). Medical tape can be applied around the edges of the dressing to hold it in place.

It it's serious, the person will be taken to the hospital. If the patient wishes to stay and is not in serious condition (has no spinal or ABC problems or severe injuries/illness), then I'd tell them to change the dressings once or twice a day and apply some antibiotic ointment to the area. After its started to scab over they can let it air out some but still apply antibiotic and try to be careful with it. If it opens up again then repeat the steps with the dressings. Also, clean it really well with soap and water, don't use peroxide or rubbing alcohol or any of that stuff because it can cause damage to tissue in a "gash" situation where it's deep.

Also, if it's severe bleeding, other ways to stop bleeding are
-direct pressure
-elevation
-arterial pressure points (can be looked up on the net depending on where the wound is)
-ice over a rag (only for the first day, and only for 15-20 minutes an hour)

Um... yeah... that's all I got for now, but if you need more specifics let me know :P

--Edit: wait, I don't know the size of the gash... If it's small then you probably don't need the dressings for more than a day, but if it's larger, then yeah... I assume "gash" means large :p

what kind of financial aid am I looking at with 3.35 gpa senior year first underrgrad student in the Fall?

I have a 3.35 gpa. It's my senior year. I applied for fafsa and said I'm eligable for about 5500. What else am I looking at? the schools I applied to are about 25,000 - 35,000 a year.

grants? loans ? scholarships?

I applied at USP university of the sciences in philadelpa
wilkes university
and Duqesene university.

1. If 5500 is your EFC, it is not saying you're eligible for that. It is saying you will have to pay out of pocket at least that amount. The lower the EFC (until 0) the more aid you are likely to receive.

2. Financial aid connected with FAFSA has nothing to do with merit--all that matters is financial need.

3. Apply to scholarships. Don't use fastwebs or any of those sites as you're competing with such a high number that unless you regularly leave your home and money rains from the sky on you you're not going to have the luck to win any of them. Instead, apply for the scholarships for each university and the state's scholarships. Sometimes there are even scholarships available to students who graduate from a certain school district or high school and you might want to ask your high school counselor if s/he knows of any.

But outside of that we can't tell you any specific numbers. When those schools accept you they will send you a financial aid package with a list of any of the grants and scholarships you may be eligible for based on your EFC and then loan offers.

Do you have to be a student first to get financial aid?

My boyfriend is currently not enrolled at the college he wants to go to, but he does want financial aid for the fall semester of this year. Does he need to enroll as a student first or can he just fill out whatever forms he needs to fill out for financial aid?

Financial aid comes through the college, and through its financial aid office. Your boyfriend needs to first apply to that college and be accepted before the talk of money can begin.

Has your boyfriend started his FAFSA profile? This has to be done first before your boyfriend can apply for financial aid.

Tell him apply to the college. Deadlines are approaching fast for many colleges.

Tell him to get on FAFSA right away and get his PIN http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

And then he can start the actual application. Once his EFC (Expected Family Contribution) is figured out by FAFSA, then he can begin the dialogue with the financial aid office at the college.

Hope that helps him, and good luck to both of you!

Is a butterfly closure enough first aid for a 1 inch forehead cut on 18 mo old.?

He fell and bumped his head on the table. the wound was deep, but able to be closed with the bandage. Not actively bleeding, he is acting normal. Don't want to traumatize with er visit if not needed.

I think you need to have a doctor look at it why dont you just call your pediatrician? Unless its the last resort try not to have an er doctor (probably a resident) closing a wound. Call your pediatrician and get his/her advice and then let the pediatrician refer you to a good plastic surgeon only!Hope it works out, take care.
