I am pregnant with my first child due in March, before I have the baby I would really like to do a first aid course so I know what to do god forbid anything happens.
has any one done one in the north west and can recommend a company that does nt cost a small fortune.
I live in Wilmslow Cheshire.
Thanks

Hi there,

Taking a first Aid/CPR course is a wonderful idea. Just check your local Red Cross-I cannot check exactly location because I need a Postal Code...

but here's the website!

First Aid : Infant & Child CPR Instructions

When performing CPR on a child or infant, check the surroundings for safety, check for a response from the victim, check for airflow, perform CPR ...

Do you think all education major students should be required to take a CPR and First Aid courses in order to g?

graduate?
Personally I think they should. A teacher is dealing with other lives and can be held responsible for a child's death. CPR and First Aid are good skills to have anyway no matter what your major but particularly if you work in a field like doctoring or teaching. I plan on taking a CPR class and I'm going to be an English major.

I agree that all educators should be required to be CPR and First aid certified...I think that the district who hires the teacher should be responsible for paying for the training as part of the inservice program.

Of course all Nurses and Dr.s know CPR, that is basic knowledge for them.

First aid courses for toddler care?

My son is more reckless than the average toddler. At 17 months he can scale pretty much any piece of furniture in the house, his latest thing is to dive off the couch with his hands extended to try to do a handstand/flip. We have tile, he's already hit his head once, but that didn't deter him.

Our pediatrician says that he's seen children like my son before and he's likely to have a broken bone or two in his youth. I'd like to try to take some first aid courses just in case, so I can do necessary things while waiting for an ambulance. And of course I'd hope to be able to help him so that an ambulance wouldn't be necessary.

Any suggestion on what kind of course to take/ where to find one. I know I want to take CPR but I'd also like something broader than that.

Well, CPR/First Aid class is what you should take. I took this class and it does offer a lot of good information I think if call your local hospital or if your son goes to daycare ask them, they will be able to tell you when/where to take it.

Good Luck.

American Heart Association CPR and First Aid Certification (Montessori Teacher Assistant)?

I don't know which classes to take. I'm getting confused by all these titles AED, Family and Friends, etc etc.

I just need something very basic since I will be working with most children and other certified adults.

I supposed I should sign up for the HeartSaver CPR and First Aid courses, correct?

Heartsaver CPR and First Aid will be sufficient. AED is a defibrillator (it is a good idea to learn how to work an AED if the school you work in has one- if not, there really isnt a point.) Most CPR classes will bring out a defibrillator and briefly show you how to work it but you will not really learn how to use it unless you take a special course. Each course is between 2-4 hours.

Why is it so darn difficult to find a first aid course in the UK?

I'm really desperate to do a first aid course for parents. My son's at that age where he's constantly getting into scrapes and situations and I'm panicking that one day he's going to come to some real harm, and I wouldn't know how to do the Heimlich manouvre or CPR if you paid me. I've read plenty of instructions on the internet but I still don't feel comfortable that I'd know how to do it all.

I've been back and forth looking at courses. Emailed my local colleges - all their courses are discontinued. Emailed St. John's Ambulance - no reply, and I've searched in all manner of ways for the parent first aid courses they *say* they offer, and it brings up no results, the only thing I can find is a paediatric first aid course for training professionals and that costs about £100 which I cannot afford and probably couldn't get on to anyway considering I don't work with children, I just, God forbid, raise one!

I've also tried contacting local hospitals and they told me to try St. John's Ambulance argh.

Don't you think it should be something that's more easily accessible to parents!? I don't feel like I should have to hunt around, let alone come to dead ends, for something so basic. Considering the amount of useless pamphlets we parents get through the post for nothing and everything, surely this should be something we are offered. Has anyone else had this trouble, and did you find a solution?!

Have you tried British Red Cross Society? Failing finding a course, join either St J's or Red Cross and attend their weekly meetings. You will learn First Aid and make new friends.
