I want to take the rescue diver course, but Padi requires you to take a First Aid course beforehand. They have their own course available, but what's the difference between their course and other first aid courses?
Many times the PADI course will also include a section on the use of Emergency Oxygen. Since Oxygen is the first aid for more DCS/DCI injuries, it is very beneficial to know this as well.
Most other first aid courses do not include the administration of emergency oxygen.

Are there any good books out there for someone who's not a professional, who just wants to be prepared if a situation comes up. So I can know what to do before the ambulance arrives or if help is going to be awhile. I've looked at some wilderness first-aid books but they don't describe how to know the difference in sypmtoms if someone was having a heart attack or a cardiac arrest. Those are just examples. Thanks for any help.
The best way would be to take a course in first aid. It's a hard subject to learn from a book without someone there to show you. The Red Cross Heartsaver course will teach you how to recognize a heart attack and how to do CPR.
If there is an emergency, and you have to call 911, the 911 dispatcher is trained to be able to give out medical instructions over the phone. It would really help to already know CPR, though.
There's something called a First Responder course, available through a lot of hospitals, fire departments, and vocational schools. It's a 40 hour course, and will teach you basic first aid. It's not at a professional level, but it will teach you what to do before the paramedics get there. It's a course commonly taught to people who may be first on scene to auto wrecks and such.
The difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest, well that one I can answer right here. A heart attack can possibly lead to a cardiac arrest. In a heart attack, the heart muscle is not getting enough oxygen, often due to a blockage in the blood supply leading to the heart. The person suffering from a heart attack will generally be having chest pain, oftentimes radiating to the left arm or jaw. They may feel a pressure on their chest "like an elephant is sitting on my chest". They may feel nauseous or vomit. They also might feel short of breath and be sweating. It's possible to have a heart attack and not feel any pain, especially in diabetics or women. A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops pumping. The person will not be conscious, not moving, and not breathing. If you try to feel for a pulse, there won't be one. This is the person that needs CPR. So, to sum it up, a person having a heart attack will still have a pulse (for now) but their heart is in big trouble. A person in cardiac arrest has no pulse, for their heart has stopped (sometimes from a heart attack that was not treated).
Hope this helps! I think it's awesome that you want to learn more about first aid!

So i signed up for my university student emergency response team, and made the first couple cuts. But now we have situation training where we have to explain the reactions to different circumstances, ie someone trapped in a car after a crash, what do you do.
Does anyone know a website or resource i could use that could maybe list some samples just to get me in the right track
I would be sooooooooo grateful, thanks in advance
Well- in the car situation- you wait for more trained/prepared people to come help. If someone is TRAPPED you do not have the tools to free them saftely. You need trained firefighters with EMS on standby to help once the person is extricated. The explination for this reaction is that you need to protect your own safety first and at a car accident there is blood and glass and possibly the risk of fire or explosion. Never enter an unsafe scene. Also- the risk of causing further harm to the victim is extensive unless you have the proper tools, training, manpower, ectera.
if you want to know what to do in the event you have all these things let me know and i can walk you through step by step what happens.
If you're interested in the emergency services I say keep working for it- helping others is one of the most thrilling and rewarding things you can do. If you have any questions about EMS feel free to contact me anytime.

I live in Australia. I am looking to download any free handbooks or guides available for First Aid. With kids I feel the need for safety at home and the need to be aware of emergency responses if required. I have searched in the Health Department Websites, but I could not locate one. Any help will be much appreciated
These sites may have at least part of what you want, and they are legal sites.

Hello, I'm doing my yearly check through of my personal Bug-Out Bag (checking expiration dates, upgrading, ect) and thought that I'd like to prepare one for my cat. I already have an extensive first aid kit stuffed full of products for humans and animals. (I am First Aid and Emergency First Response trained)
So far after some research I have compliled this list:
General First Aid products
Carrier
Dry and Wet food she's used too
Water purification tabs and filters
Reflective leash, collar and harness
Up to date tags
A tupperware container with the brand of litter she's used too
A set of collapsable bowls
Her brush
Her favorite blanket which I intend to grab on the way out!
Some things I saw mentioned but wasn't so sure about:
A Life Vest, is it worth it? She's never swam before.
Flea and Tick preventative? She lives exclusivelly indoors, and I am highlly allergic to drip products like advantage or frontline so it'd have to be a shampoo.
Would a product like Pet Ease or Feliway (sp?) be worth it? These build up in the system to have a full effect.
Is there anything I've forgotton? Or any suggestions or allterations?
I intend to leave as much as possible prepped in my car along with my supplies and keep a small go bag in the house with things like food and little else. So everything needs to be able to handle the high temps a car can get too when left in a parking lot all day.
Thanks for looking, any help is appreciated!
Thanks Elsa : )
I'd rather be safe than sorry!
OOOO! Major addition, important for ANYONE traveling in a group be it with your parents, siblings, children or pets; make sure to have a current photo of everyone in the group for identification purposes and to help you re-locate one another should you become separated.
You may want to consider a Flea Collar if that is something you want to protect your cat from. If you believe you will end up outside, staying in an outdoor environment - protection from these things would be very valuable.
You may also want to keep your cats health records in your bug out bag. Make sure you have any current records copied and put in with your cats things.
If you have a heartworm preventative or other meds, make sure you have those as well.
