I just found a piece of choc my 4.5 kg dog aged 10 yrs scavenged from the rubbish bin - it was 3 squares of nestles' dark choc - only found one square so suspect he might have eaten the other 2 - have weighed whats left - just 5 gms - is this amount liekly to be dangerous? its quite late and no vet available in my area.Dog is maltese/silky cross. he has prior history of mast cell tumour diagnosed 2 yrs ago but currently not causing problems. Any idea what I should do for first aid -??? I honestly didn't think he could reach inside the waste paper bin - the choc is dark choc is that worse than milk choc?
I don't know if that chocolate being poisonous to dogs thing has ever been scientifically proven. Think of it this way, have you personally ever heard of a dog dying from chocolate? I dont mean "i have a friend who has a friend, whos friends dog died" Do u know anyone this has happened to?
If the dog seems ok I wouldn't panic, just keep an eye on him for a while, I'm sure he will be fine.

Have you ever taken a dog first-aid class?
Do you have a dog emergency first-aid kit?
Note: I'm not talking about "do-it-yourself" in place of vet care, but knowing how to react and having the tools to get the dog to the vet in a slightly safer condition. (Bandaging bleeding, knowing the heimlich maneuver, etc.)
I have, actually, taken a first aid class.
Every dog owner really should have that information at their fingertips. You may never need it, and then again you may. Its best to be prepared.
The things that they taught us in the class were the basic splinting, bandaging, calming a fretting and injured dog, Heimlich maneuver, etc.
And the first aid kid included:
Gauze sponges -- 50 four-by-four inch sponges, two per envelope
Triple antibiotic ointment
Rubbing alcohol
Ear syringe -- two ounce capacity
Ace self-adhering athletic bandage -- three-inch width
White petroleum jelly (Vaseline or similar)
Eye wash
Sterile, non-adherent pads
Pepto Bismol tablets
Generic Benadryl capsules -- 25mg, for allergies
Hydrocortisone acetate -- one percent cream
Sterile stretch gauze bandage -- three inches by four yards
Buffered aspirin
Dermicil hypoallergenic cloth tape one inch by 10 yards
Hydrogen peroxide
Kaopectate tablets maximum strength
Bandage scissors
Custom splints
Vet Rap bandage
I, luckily, only had to use it once for Max's sprained paw when he was a puppy, but when you have pets, you need to be prepared.

what all should come in a emergency "First Aid" kit for a dog?
Both of the above are good answers but I would add that if you have a deep chested breed prone to bloat you may also want to put together a bloat kit, bloat is always an emergency and often not noticed until advanced.

I mean beyond the obvious like bandaging superficial wounds, which anyone with half a braincell should be able to work out how to do.
I realised I know nothing beyond that. Is there a mouth-to-mouth type thing for dog and if so, how would you do it? I mean, what DO you do if your dog stops breathing?
Are there crash courses out there for people who want to learn dog first aid or is it a case of learning the theory and hoping you can put it into practice should any situation arise?
I know this may sound daft but I'm slightly worried now. I always thought of myself as a responsible dog owner but if my dog just stopped breathing, I wouldn't know what the eff to do.
(In reality I'd call an emergency vet and get them to guide me through everything like they do when you call the emergency services.. but you get my drift, right?)
I do. There is a Red Cross course you can take. Canine first aid. I am certified. I wouldn't consider myself a professional trainer or behaviorist without that certification. Contact your local Red Cross to be certified. Every pet owner should do it.
You learn what to do if your dog goes into shock, stops breathing, chokes, is poisoned, is bleeding to death... pretty much everything. Look into it.

i need to make a first aid kit of my dog just in case of any accidents or emergencies such as earthquakes or breaking a leg or bleeding. of course ill take my dog to the vet right away, if she is hurt, but i want to be able to do something on my way to the vet. so im just wondering what are the top things you would absolutely necessarily need in a first aid kit for dogs.
